Have installed the new video card.

I had both four prong power supplies necessary!

I am no longer squinting through Pepto-Bismol to see the screen.

(I did, however, move the audio card to give the video card more space, as was suggested by someone online. These Gen 2 computers are dust hogs, and it helps to give the fan a little more room, apparently. However, now I have to get the sound to work again. Let's hope a quick driver reinstall will fix it...)

Hooray for being able to see!

Today was the first day of the garage sale.

Slow.

We sold some stuff, but not anywhere near what I had hoped to.

Sister was going to help me, but was very ill this morning. So I had to run around like a loon and try to get things arranged. And Husband had brought up EVERYTHING from the basement and piled it in the aisles. Let me tell you, I am exhausted. I moved it all out onto the driveway by myself and unpacked another twenty boxes and put up a tent and...etc.

Bad luck #1: I reposted the Craigslist ad yesterday, and then went to repost it this morning. (I am aggravated that, in order to repost, you must delete and then post anew.) Only, I forgot that it has a captcha thing, and I was super crazed so I just hit post and ran away. So. My ad was not visible this morning, as it was deleted, and the new ad was waiting to be verified. Sigh.

Bad luck #2: All eight of our signs were "uprooted," according to Husband. I don't know how and/or who. I *do* know that we had two signs in front of our yard, and one of them was down at about one because the neighbor girl came and told me. Not certain what happened.

All in all? I am wishing I'd just donated it all in one fell swoop.

I hope tomorrow is better.

At least I see [info]gypsyjolie and my BIL tomorrow morning. One lovely ray of light in the otherwise stress-filled weekend.

Garage sale cometh.

Also, in other news, I did a bit of a flist trim. Some defunct journals, some un-updated journals, and some comms. Slowly pulling away from more things HP.

Still interested. Just not like before, you know?

Okay, back to the basement.

So. I've looked over my system. Turns out the power supply is strangely situated at the base of the unit (check it out) and it's a pain to get out and it's thin. So I can't replace it easily.

I've purchased an ATI Radeo HD2600 Pro 512 MB DDR2, which says it needs 400 watts to operate. It'll be delivered tomorrow.

ETA: Looks like it's a VisionTek model, and it needs 300 watts.

The system's power supply is rated at 460 watts.

I've seen someone on the forums who apparently is running a similar card, with no worries. Most people, though, seem to be suggesting that a separate power supply is necessary.

My system specs )

So what do you think? Should I hazard putting in the card and hooking it in to the main power supply? Or should I get the card its own separate power supply and just rig it out of the case? Thoughts would be incredibly appreciated.

So my monitor has degraded to the point that it looks like I'm about to fall into the world of Tron. Pink lines, crazy blocks, dots and moving green masses. At other points it looks like the Matrix exploded.

I bought a card from Dell, one of those suggested: an ATI Radeon HD2600 PRO 512 MB DDR2. And now I'm really worried that the power supply for my computer will be insufficient. According to specs online, I have a 460 watt power supply. The specs for the card require a 400 watt power supply. I can't quite wrap my brain around any of this; I'm trying to figure out if my existing power cord will work with it or not.

Website friend is coming over tonight, ostensibly to check out the sale, and he might get tortured about power supply specifics. And pressed into service to move boxes. Poor guy!

Anyway, Dell claimed that it would take 2-3 days for me to receive it, and then when I got the shipping confirmation email, it claimed a delivery date of the 17th. Uh, fail. Today there is a "rescheduled" date of tomorrow, which makes a lot more sense.

So. I've finished sweeping the garage. You would NOT believe how much crud there was. Hulled birdseed was everywhere along one wall. The metal and plastic racks were completely covered with dust and cobwebs. I cleaned some of it off, but they really require a good soaking on the lawn. Yeah, that bad.

Little more about the garage sale )

Crap weekend. I have tried so hard to be nice and easy and caaaalm but it is not working. Reasons for this:

1) Husband's grandmother as houseguest for two nights. Now, this is not in itself a problem, as she is a pretty awesome person in many ways, but I am just not mentally equipped to deal with most houseguests.

2) MY COMPUTER OMG WOES. The monitor is displaying lots of extra dots and bars and weird green lines on top of everything. I think the video card is on its way to toast. I've ordered a new card, but I'm currently freaking because a) should I just get a new computer? I mean, really, I bought this one in 10/03, and even though it was top of the line at that time, it's probably only just holding its own now, and b) the new card? might need a special power supply just for itself. GRAH. And this is the worst, because y'all know I can't live without my computer. I am going nuts. I want to write and I'm afraid of giving myself massive headache. And remember that giant eBay listing project? Well, this is certainly making it challenging. grah.

3) Fourth of July party we hosted yesterday. I planned it so that I would have to do the least amount of work possible, and that did work out, but still, sun porch full of people I barely know? Sometimes I can deal with it, and I did, and there were fabulous fireworks, but it was a bit exhausting.

and a leetle more woe )

If you missed the Wavedancer Project, which is my reread of a romance novel I started to write about thirteen years ago along with my modern-day commentary, you can read it here. If you're just interested in reading the commentary entries, they're here. I know that a few of you were interested, and I apologize to everyone about how the entries were spaced when I originally posted them--I just didn't have enough time to space them out as I would have liked. Anyway, there you go.

Garage sale of doom is coming up. Can I just say that I am thrilled, and absolutely terrified?

This is going to be a busy month. I've been sorting merchandise like crazy, and doing a revamp of my eBay store, and I'm just completely pressed for time. For once, I know what I have to get done, and I'm just trying to go forward and do it. Plus, I have a show to do for my WI friends, and I have a show in my parents' little town, and a show in OH. eee! There are not enough hours in the day.

From FOAF, I've received a lovely set of Magnificent 7 h/c recs. I'm really intrigued by this fandom. Especially in this AU ATF world. More on that later.

I dreamt I was watching a Laurel and Hardy movie. In the dream, I was thinking, oh yes, this is part of their famous "Watch the Road" series.

Sure enough, the theme music came on and white credits announced "Watch the Road." A British voice sang:

All you really need to do is watch the road
Watch the road
Watch the road

You just really need to watch the road
Watch the road
Watch the road

So the premise is this. There's black paper on the ground with white lines marked on it, and Laurel and Hardy are pretending to be in a car together, but they're actually just walking side-by-side in their "lane." Hardy is pontificating about road safety to Laurel, and explaining rules of the road, with predictable Laurel and Hardy results.

An example. Hardy tells him he needs to signal if he's turning left, and does a hand signal with his left arm, and of course the "driver" who is passing him on the left gets beaned in the head with Hardy's hand.

I don't understand, brain. I've watched maybe twenty minutes of Laurel and Hardy in my entire lifetime, and haven't thought of them in at least a year. Seriously. And I doubt that this was really a skit of theirs. WTF?

And the theme music WILL NOT leave my brain. I really wish I could get the phone post function to work, because I'd sing it for you.

(As an aside, can I mention that the "highway" they were performing on was definitely an Eisenhower-style highway, and after I woke up I was disappointed? I mean, the theme music and the credits were very true to the time period.)

Craziness abounds at the Valis Domicile. I got home after work, listed all my new eBay auctions, listed a whole set of stuff in my eBay store, picked out next week's eBay auctions, listed a couple items on Etsy, packed a bunch of shipments, paid some bills. I'm boggling at this weird burst of activity.

The Giant Scary Riptide Fic is still dominating half of my brain, lurking back there, staring at me. "Good grief, Valis," it says in a nasty hissing drawl. "You've written 38k already. What's another 38k? Go on, read me again. Read me and dare to like me."

Um. I actually do. Like it, that is. I hope I can find time to continue it. The size is daunting, though. I'm a little exhausted just thinking of it. I should just envision writing the next scene and not angst over writing another 38k.

And I do NOT need to look for Chris Larabee Magnificent 7 h/c fics. No. I do not. grah.

Quick update.

My dear friends from WI left yesterday. They stayed with me for just under a week, and a good time was had by all, even the poodle. Hence the lack of LJ entries from me, though I'm sure you're all used to my absences by now.

And now Husband and I are off to a wedding held on the west coast of MI.

More update tomorrow, I think.

Hey there, help with garage sale stuff?

I'm about to wander about the net and look for stuff about garage sales, since we're going to have the mother of all garage sales in July. Then it occurred to me to ask you guys, too.

See, I've never had a garage sale before. The location of my parents' house wasn't conducive to them.

So, pricing strategies? Pricing guides? Thoughts about pricing?

Advertising? Do people still put ads in the paper, or is there a new internet forum where one does such things now?

Signs?

Thoughts?

Any advice would be tremendously appreciated. Seriously. I have 1000 square feet of stuff to unload.

(Some of my work is done already. Apparently there is a very popular county fair that takes place just down the road from our house, so everyone does their garage sales that week. I'm planning on setting up for the six days of the show, seriously. I have white tents and extra tables, that sort of thing. And I plan on putting up nice signs--not cardboard crap--at all of the relevant spots.)

Just me, checking in

I am home. wow!

Sadly enough, there is no way I have time to catch up on the month of flist entries. Plus, my dear friends from WI are staying with me next week (starting Sunday), so it will be a little hectic and I doubt I'll be reading.

So the show was super busy. Unlike last year, when I couldn't remember my own name, I managed to pull through. Must be the wedding that made me half-crazy last time.

I didn't get to see almost any of the show, but that's probably a good thing. I did buy waaay too much stuff, but hopefully that will pay off. *crosses fingers*

Missed you all very much. This is going to be a helluva busy summer for me, and I'll try to keep connecting whenever I can. *nodnod*

Well, for now.

I am leaving for WI. Yep, it's that time of year, time for the Big Huge Show that takes three weeks to prepare for, plus a week for the show itself. I am freaking out, believe me. *nodnod*

I will miss you very much, flist! I'll be checking my email occasionally, so you can always reach me there, though I won't be checking it much during the last week and a half.

I'll be back on June 11th.

Please don't defriend me for inactivity. I'll be back to my old ways in a month. (Though not so spammy--I have a crazy summer planned.)

The sink contained the dirty dishes from this morning, and the rack held the dishes I'd washed before going to the cove yesterday. I began to hang the clean coffee cups on the rack as Mike came in and closed and bolted the door. He turned towards me as if to say something, but then seemed to reconsider. Instead he switched off the foyer light and walked into his kitchen.

And finally, the last installment. Thank goodness. Only one entry left, which will detail what was supposed to happen if I had written it all.

I underestimated how many sections this would take, unfortunately. That's why I've been totally spamming you; I'm walking out the door in just a couple hours and I wanted to get it all out before I left.

I like this dance between them. I like that they can't say what they want to say. She's convinced he doesn't care for her at all, and she's determined to go forward with her blinders firmly attached. He's really uncertain about how to approach her about any of this.

The rest of the morning went fairly well, as we managed to get two more keepers, an excellent catch for so late in the season. Mr. Jensen decided to cut it short at ten thirty, as Sean was starting to get worn out. I could see the beginnings of a sunburn on his young face. I packed it it and headed for home, trying to sort out my mental list of things to do with a charterless afternoon.

I thought for a moment on what fishing technique to use, and decided upon planerboards, two flat pieces of wood standing on their sides with metal spacers running through them. I pulled them out of the small cabin and hopped into the bow with Sean. I'd brought the planerboard mast with me as well and I screwed it into place at the very tip of the bow.

"What's that?" he asked, examining it closely.

Again, this is a fishing-intense chapter.

I have a small quibble about the use of "what" with "what fishing technique;" should probably be "which."

What is it about sleeping on couches? Don't they have beds?

This section is pretty much all about fishing.

Let me just say right up front that this is all Lake Erie-style fishing, and is completely wrong for Lake Michigan, and I apologize to any fishermen reading this.
